Fired Up!!! Ready to Go!!!

Today President Obama celebrated Labor Day at the Annual AFL-CIO Picnic in Cincinnati, Ohio to discuss Health Care Insurance Reform.

President Obama would like Health Care Insurance Reform to pass by the end of this year. It would mean a campaign promise fulfilled as well as a dramatic historical achievement of any President in American History.

Most Americans who can afford health care insurance can't afford to get sick because of the high out of pocket cost associated with their existing health care policies not to mention the cost of the premiums either being deducted from their paychecks or for self employed individuals like myself paid totally out of pocket for private individual health care policies.

Here is an example of my personal experience with health care premiums and deductibles in the last year:

This year the skyrocketing cost of my private health care insurance forced me to changes my annual deductible. I now have a deductible 10 times that of what I had just one year ago.

Why?

Blue Cross increased my monthly premiums by almost two (2) times the monthly cost.

Why?

The cost of insurance went up by 30% for private policies and I entered into a new age range/band, which changes every three (3) years. Now how do they calculate this 30% increase? I wish I knew.

In order to keep my premiums affordable I switched my plan. Fortunately if I see a preferred in network doctor, my annual routine exams are covered with a $40 office visit and the only time I have to worry about paying my hefty deductible is if I suffer a major illness or hospitalization. I am in generally good health which is why I changed.

Let me offer yet another scenario which occurred with a family member who is a cancer patient/survivor. Upon admission into the hospital with a Blue Shield policy there was an extremely high deductible for hospitalization. They requested a large up front payment/deductible of several thousands of dollars on the day of the surgery. Without the payment the surgery would be rescheduled.

Fortunately, surgery occurred, however the stress associated with the cost of health care can be a side effect to your illness and may lead to more serious suffering. In this economy can we all honestly say that if we were faced with the same scenario we would be able to afford such an expense or would we have to wait and reschedule a potentially life saving surgery?

There are so many variables that can affect our health care insurance and without a reform, many will be left without coverage. The solution can no longer be left to the health insurance companies who have been at the steering wheel driving on the backs of Americans who have been forced to pay high premiums and deductibles which truly is sad and disgraceful for America.

What can we all do today???

Voice your opinion to the President about heath care insurance reform. Call and leave a message for President Obama.

Here is the number for the White House Comment Line: 1-202-456-1111

Calls are accepted from 9am-5pm Eastern Time.

The anti-health care reform people are making their voices heard loud & clear.

Let's all do the same. Pass this along, so we can flood the lines with our opinions.

Petition to President Obama:

"We worked so hard for real change. President Obama, please demand a strong public health insurance option in your speech to Congress. Letting the insurance companies win would not be change we can believe in."

President Obama on Senator Ted Kennedy

When President Obama records history, it will be noted that the Roar of Senator Edward (Ted) Kennedy was a driving force behind his election. As America reviews the Civil Rights Era and changes in the laws supporting civil rights there is simply no other political force more influential than Ted Kennedy.

From his website: The Life of Ted Kennedy

Edward M. Kennedy was the third longest-serving member of the United States Senate in American history. Voters of Massachusetts elected him to the Senate nine times—a record matched by only one other Senator.

President Obama has described his breathtaking span of accomplishment: “For five decades, virtually every major piece of legislation to advance the civil rights, health, and economic well being of the American people bore his name and resulted from his efforts.”

He fought for and won so many great battles—on voting rights, education, immigration reform, the minimum wage, national service, the nation’s first major legislation to combat AIDS, and equality for minorities, women, the disabled and gay Americans.

He called health care “the cause of my life,” and succeeded in bringing quality and affordable health care for countless Americans, including children, seniors and Americans with disabilities. Until the end he was working tirelessly to achieve historic national health reform. He was an opponent of the Vietnam War and an early champion of the war’s refugees. He was a powerful yet lonely voice from the beginning against the invasion of Iraq. He stood for human rights abroad—from Chile to the former Soviet Union – and was a leader in the cause of poverty relief for the poorest nations of Africa and the world. He believed in a strong national defense and he also unceasingly pursued and advanced the work of nuclear arms control.

He was the conscience of his party, and also the Senate’s greatest master of forging compromise with the other party. Known as the “Lion of the Senate,” Senator Kennedy was widely respected on both sides of the aisle for his commitment to progress and his ability to legislate.

Barack Obama issued a presidential proclamation on Wednesday ordering flags to be flown at half-mast on all official US buildings following the death of Ted Kennedy.

"As a mark of respect for the memory of Senator Edward M. Kennedy, I hereby order... that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds," the proclamation said.

The order included flags at "all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels... throughout the United States and its territories and possessions."

Flags must remain at half-mast until sunset on Sunday and be lowered again until sunset on the day of Kennedy's burial, it said. The date of the senator's interment is still to be announced.

Obama's proclamation paid tribute to "not only one of the greatest senators of our time, but one of the most accomplished Americans ever to serve our democracy.

Obama's Historic Speech to Muslims

Today marks the first time in history that an American President traveled to the Middle East and sincerely reached out to the Muslim world to seek common ground with all religions and hopefully make peace with Muslims around the world and the United States.

Breaking from tradition of previous administrations, President Obama hoped to gain the respect and recognition of Muslims as he moves towards a resolution or strategy of commitment to united people around the world.

During his speech to approximately 3500 in Cairo the capital of Egypt,  President Obama was greeted with frequent applauses and shouts of "We love you Obama."  His speech was emotionally charged and maintained the central theme that peace was the goal and the action we take moving forward would be significant.  He further prolifically stated the golden rule of all religions that we seek to treat one another with dignity and respect.

With expectations high and hopeful the audience greeted President Obama with a standing ovation and most importantly when he left the podium at the end, they issued another standing ovation.

President Obama opened a door to peace in the middle east that may be the shift that could result in the achievement of lasting freedom and rights to all people in the region.

Obama ambitiously pursues plan to bring high speed rail to America!

Imagine that America's rail system which currently trails the rest of the developed world may have high speed service in a city near you!

Currently the fastest service offered by Amtrak is service on the Acela Express connecting Boston to Washington DC at speeds of 100 mph. No comparison to the 300 mph offered by rail services in Spain, France, China and Japan.

If you've travelled abroad you have likely boarded one of these high speed trains and experienced the comfort and speed of such remarkable service connecting you to major international cities.

The President's focus on America's need for an improved and advanced rail system addresses his campaign promises to reduce our dependency on foreign oil and the promise to create jobs now and in the future. This plan allows for long term economic growth and preservation to the environment.

High speed rail will give Americans the opportunity to forgo the long security lines at airports and avoid traffic jams on highways and most importantly enjoy the use of modern technology like cellphones, blackberries and computers which have become a moment to moment way of living.

There's nothing like a train ride to your destination while you are free to sleep, read, or simply observe the scenic route. Not to mention eliminating road rage, or a cramped airline seat. Rail seating is comfortable, relaxing and one of the safest forms of transportation.

Want more information?

National Train Day is May 9th, 2009 and events are planned in the following US cities:

1. Washington DC

2. Philadelphia

3. Chicago

4. Los Angeles
