Fired Up!!! Ready to Go!!!

Today President Obama celebrated Labor Day at the Annual AFL-CIO Picnic in Cincinnati, Ohio to discuss Health Care Insurance Reform.

President Obama would like Health Care Insurance Reform to pass by the end of this year. It would mean a campaign promise fulfilled as well as a dramatic historical achievement of any President in American History.

Most Americans who can afford health care insurance can't afford to get sick because of the high out of pocket cost associated with their existing health care policies not to mention the cost of the premiums either being deducted from their paychecks or for self employed individuals like myself paid totally out of pocket for private individual health care policies.

Here is an example of my personal experience with health care premiums and deductibles in the last year:

This year the skyrocketing cost of my private health care insurance forced me to changes my annual deductible. I now have a deductible 10 times that of what I had just one year ago.

Why?

Blue Cross increased my monthly premiums by almost two (2) times the monthly cost.

Why?

The cost of insurance went up by 30% for private policies and I entered into a new age range/band, which changes every three (3) years. Now how do they calculate this 30% increase? I wish I knew.

In order to keep my premiums affordable I switched my plan. Fortunately if I see a preferred in network doctor, my annual routine exams are covered with a $40 office visit and the only time I have to worry about paying my hefty deductible is if I suffer a major illness or hospitalization. I am in generally good health which is why I changed.

Let me offer yet another scenario which occurred with a family member who is a cancer patient/survivor. Upon admission into the hospital with a Blue Shield policy there was an extremely high deductible for hospitalization. They requested a large up front payment/deductible of several thousands of dollars on the day of the surgery. Without the payment the surgery would be rescheduled.

Fortunately, surgery occurred, however the stress associated with the cost of health care can be a side effect to your illness and may lead to more serious suffering. In this economy can we all honestly say that if we were faced with the same scenario we would be able to afford such an expense or would we have to wait and reschedule a potentially life saving surgery?

There are so many variables that can affect our health care insurance and without a reform, many will be left without coverage. The solution can no longer be left to the health insurance companies who have been at the steering wheel driving on the backs of Americans who have been forced to pay high premiums and deductibles which truly is sad and disgraceful for America.

What can we all do today???
